We believe that development of the Coate area will have a devastating impact on wildlife at Coate Water nature reserve. It would desecrate an area that has strong historic, literary and recreational attractions and destroy the last remaining pocket of unspoilt countryside close to Swindon. Coate Water Site of Special Scientific Interest contributes to the very best of the rich variety and abundance of wildlife that makes England's nature special and distinct from any other country in the world........We demand that a one kilometre buffer of land is left undeveloped next to Coate Water.......We call upon Swindon Borough Council to say NO to development at Coate...........Please sign the petition!.............

The Swindon Borough Local Plan includes provision for a university campus, 1800 dwellings and a large "employment" zone at Coate.

However, in March 2007, the University of Bath pulled out of the plans, closely followed by the Swindon & Marlborough NHS Trust who have their own proposals to expand the Great Western Hospital.  This leaves Redrow Homes and Persimmon Homes frantically trying to persuade another university to build a campus on countryside that is, without question, the most sensitive area ecologically and historically in the entire borough.

Over 33,000 people have already signed the petition objecting to the proposal and hundreds more have objected to the planning application submitted by the national house-builders in April 2005.

A new planning application for a massive housing estate was lodged with Swindon Borough Council in the summer 2007.  The developers now offer glimpses of the countryside between the buildings from Coate Water.

In the meantime the University of the West of England is keen to progress proposals to build a campus for 3,000 students at a town centre site.

Please object to the new proposals for the Coate area.
